Diary ring: Secret Santa
Okay folks, I had a brainstorm earlier today for a new diary ring. It's called Secret Santa, and it's so we can all get some use out of those Amazon.com wishlists a lot of us have. It's by approval only right now, so I'm going to set down the rules here, and I'll try to get anyone approved within a day or two who follows them.

  1. This is the big duh as far as rules go. You must have the ring code, or something that serves the same purpose as the ring code, up on your main page or a rings page in order for me to approve your membership. No one else will find the ring from your diary if the code isn't up and reasonably accessible. I'm going to go with the three clicks rule that I see so often on other rule lists; if I can't find the link within three clicks once I get to your diary, you won't be approved. End of discussion.
  2. You must have some sort of wishlist linked from your diary, whether it be Amazon.com, or some other place that does wishlists. If you don't have a wishlist, how can someone buy you stuff?
  3. Try to keep at least a couple of reasonably priced (under $10) items on your wishlist. This isn't a hard and fast rule, but if I go to your wishlist and don't see anything under $100, I'm not approving you. This is supposed to be for *small* random acts of kindness, and while I'm sure there's some people out in Diaryland somewhere that has $100 extra to spend on a stranger, they're really the minority.
  4. Oh yeah, and no locked diaries. This is another big duh, I suppose.

That's it for the joining rules.

I'd also like to keep a list on this page of people who have sent items, as well as people who have received items since joining this ring. If you buy something for someone, drop me a note or a guestbook entry or an email and let me know. If you get a package from a fellow diarylander, let me know, even if it's sent anonymously, although I think most people will take credit for what they buy. And I realize that there might be people who would like to join that can't afford to send presents to strangers, and that's okay too. Maybe you'll want to burn a mix CD for someone after reading the list of favorite artists on their profile, or send them a link to a book review of a book written by an author they really like. Just as long as you carry the spirit of Christmas everyday with you.

If you have any other ideas for this ring, please let me know. I want this to be fun for everyone.

If you receive anything from your participation in the Secret Santa diary ring, email me and let me know who you are, what you got, and who you got it from, and I will post it here! I think seeing that this actually works will inspire more people to join. I personally intend to send out at least one present every month to someone in the ring.
